After long term study of Newfoundland and Canadian cents, Newcan has come to the conclusion that the cents produced by the Canadian Mint, especially between 1943 and 1945, may have composition variances other than normal for this series. Newcan speculates that precise composition tests were not high on the list of things to do at a Canadian Mint as millions of tons of spent copper and steel munitions and equipment lay scattered across the entire planet. In addition, the buying power of one cent during that period was significant and as the war moved into its closing phase the lowly cent became an even more important specie to satisfy the economic needs of a Canadian and World economy moving into hyper-drive as millions of fortunate surviving soldiers from many countries, returned to marry, have children, begin gainful employment and rebuild everything. I am sure that many who read this may say - ' Nonsense ! or BS ! ' ; but keep in mind - all the dates from 1943 --> 1945 were the initial transformation years of a complete World economy moving from war to peace. The lack of a consistent metals supply was a recovery problem everywhere both during and after both world wars as can be seen in the common war practice of coins composed of tin, zinc, aluminum, nickel and combinations thereof. This variety was caused when a Striking Die had a very thin delamination around the entire Obverse periphery. The result looks something like Map elevation lines. Newcan has seen these 2 examples and one other in over 35 - 40 years. This example has strong frost - both sides with 80%/70% gold-red and hints of blue-green on Obverse. If grade was considered separately for both sides the result would be MS62 RB/MS64+ RB. The Obverse has significant contact and Reverse visually appears contact free. | $750.00 |
